How to setup and run a NAS to NAS Backup

Instructions for copying data from one NAS to another.

All of the following steps to setup and run a NAS to NAS backup or restore can be done from the same computer.

  1. Open BlackArmor Discovery.
  2. Select the backup destination BlackArmor and click the "View Drive Details” button.
  3. Click the “Manage” button.
  4. A browser will open.  Log in as “Admin”.
    Another option to open the Manager page is to open a browser.
    In the Address Field type “//the BA’s ip address or name” and Enter.
  5. Mouse over “Storage” and from the drop-down menu select “Backup Manager”.
  6. Under the “Storage” section on the left of the page, locate and click “Server Setting”.
  7. Click a check mark in the small square next to “Backup Service” and click Submit if needed.
    Note the “Auth name” and “Auth password”.

Create an “Alias Name”.

  1. Type a name or word in the field next to “Alias Name”.
  2. Click the “Add new alias” button.  It will display “Processing” for a moment.
  3. Click the “Alias Name Editing” drop-down and choose the alias just created and click the “Submit” button.  Again it will show “Processing” for a moment.

Setup the Backup on the source BlackArmor.

  1. Open BlackArmor Discovery.
  2. Select the backup source BlackArmor and click the "View Drive Details” button.
  3. Click the “Manage” button.
  4. A browser will open.  Log in as “Admin”.
  5. Mouse over “Storage” and from the drop-down menu select “Backup Manager”.
  6. Under the “Storage” section on the left of the page locate and click either “NAS to NAS” or “Schedule Backup”.
    “NAS to NAS” is a run once manual backup of selected folders.
    “Schedule Backup” will be used for these instructions.
  7. Click “Schedule Backup”.
  8. Select “Network Backup”.
  9. Select a folder for Backup under “Source folder select”.
    Note: Multiple folders can be selected by selecting one then click “ADD”, select another folder, click “ADD”, etc.
  10. In this example I will select a single folder called Claudia and the click “Add”.
  11. Enter a “Backup Description”. 
    Example:  Claudia to BA-FEFd1C, which is the name of the selected folder and the name of the BlackArmor destination.
  12. For “Backup Frequency”, choose “Daily” or individual days of the week.
  13. Set the “Backup Time”, (24 hour).
  14. Click the “Detect IP Address” button.
  15. Click the “Backup server select” drop-down and click the BlackArmor name that was found.
    It will populate the “IP address” field and the “Target Server Name” field.
  16. Type the Alias that was created earlier in the “Alias name” field.
    Note:  The Alias may be available to choose using the “Alias name” drop-down.
  17. Type in the “Auth name” and “Auth password” that was noted from the destination BlackArmor’s Manager page.
  18. Click the “Test Connection” button.
    A popup should report, “Connection and login test OK.”  Click the “OK” button.
  19. Click the “Schedule Button”.
    Note:  The scheduled backup time will start based on the time settings of the BlackArmor’s clock not the clock of the computer you are using.

How to Restore from a NAS to NAS Backup

  1. Open BlackArmor Discovery.
  2. Select the backup source BlackArmor and click the "View Drive Details” button.
  3. Click the “Manage” button.
  4. A browser will open.  Log in as “Admin”.
    Another option to open the Manager page would be to open a browser.
    In the Address Field, type “//the BA ip address or name” and Enter.
  5. Mouse over “Storage” and from the drop down menu select the “Backup Manager”.
  6. On the left side of the page click “Restore”.
  7. In the Executed Schedule list, under ---Restore manually---, select a Backup from this field.
    A backup example may show like “Network200905111645285” which is the Last backup date and time: 2009/05/11 16:45
    Another backup example could show like “Claudia to BA-FEFD1C”.  Claudia is a private share folder, the backup source, and BA-FEFd1C is the name of the BlackArmor destination.
  8. Next, select a destination folder from the “Restore destination” field.
  9. Click the “Restore Now” button.
    Below this button a percentage of completion will be displayed.
  10. Click “Task Monitor” on the left. 
    Links will be slow to respond with the Restore in progress.
  11. The Task Monitor page will list the Task.  Click the Task to select and it will show additional status below.
    The Task Schedule field will show “No tasks running” when the restore has completed.
