Seagate WSS NAS - How to create an NFS VMware Datastore

Explains how to create an NFS VMware Datastore with the Seagate WSS NAS.

These instructions are based on the Seagate WSS NAS in a Workgroup.  

Note: The basic settings used to create the NFS share and the VMware Datastore are for example only and may differ in the field.  

 

Add the "Server for NFS" Role to the Windows Server WSS NAS
 

  1. Open Server Manager > Dashboard. Under Configure this local server, click Add Roles and Features.
     

  2. Click Next until you reach Server Roles.
     

  3. Under File and Storage Services > File and iSCSI Services, select Server for NFS.
    The Add Roles and Features Wizard may prompt to Add NFS Management Tools.  Click Add Features.

     

  4. Click Next to install Server for NFS.

 

 

After the Server for NFS Role has been installed continue to the next step.

 

Create an NFS share and set the NFS permissions

 
  1. In the Server Manager, click File and Storage Services and select Shares.
     

  2. Select Task, then New Share.
     

  3. Select NFS Share - Quick, then select Next.

 

 
  1. Select a Share location and click Next.

    Note: It is not recommended to use the C: drive for shares because it is only a 60GB partition. Choose the Virtual Disk Volume.

 

 
  1. Specify a share name and select Next.
     

 
  1. Configure Share Settings and click Next.
     

  1. Specify authentication methods and select Next.

 

 
  1. Specify share permissions click Add.
     

  2. Select All Machines, Allow root access, and for Share permissions, select Read /
    Write. Click Add, then Next.

    Note: The selections and options used in these instructions are for example only.

 
  1. Click Next.

 

Specify permissions to control access
 

  1. Click Customize permissions.
     

 
  1. In Advanced Security Settings for NFS on the Permissions tab, click Add.

 


 

  1. Choose Select a principal.

 


 

  1. Under Enter the object name, type in Everyone, then click Check Names.  When Everyone is found click OK.

 


 

  1. For Basic permissions, select the Full control box. Modify and Write will be selected automatically, then click OK.

 

 
  1. In the Permission entries field notice Everyone is set to Full control.  Click Apply and then OK.



 

 
  1. For Permissions to control access, click Next.

 

 
  1. Confirm Selections and click Create.
     

 
  1. When the NFS Share has been successfully created, select Close.

 

Setup VMware using the vSphere Client
 

  1. Log in to the VMware vSphere Client from a workstation.
     

  2. From the Home page choose Inventory.

 

 

Using an existing vSwitch for NFS Network Traffic

In this example will be using an existing vSwitch.  Use VMware documentation for help creating a new vSwitch.

 

  1. Click to highlight the VMware Server's IP Address on the top left.
     

  2. Click the Configuration tab on the right.
     

  3. On the left side, select Networking.
     

  4. Click Add Networking... on the top right between Refresh and Properties

 

 

Choose the Connection Type
 

  1. Select VMkernel and Click Next.


 

  1. Select Use vSwitch1 and click Next.
     

  1. At the Port Group Properties window, fill in the following information:

 
  1. Network Label - Enter any name to describe the Port Group and click Next.

 

 
  1. Select Obtain IP settings automatically and click Next.

 

 
  1. Preview and Confirm the details are correct and then click Finish.

 

 

Create the NFS Datastore

 
  1. On the left side, select the VMware server IP Address.

 
  1. Click the Configuration tab.
     

  2. On the left side, click Storage.
     

  3. Select Add Storage in the upper right corner.

 

 
  1. Select Network File System, then click Next.

 

 
  1. At the Server window, enter the following information:

 
  • Seagate Business NAS IP Address

  • Folder - /shares/vm (where vm is the share name)  NOT SURE YET************

  • Datastore Name - Enter any name for that specific NFS Mount

 
  1. Click Next.

 

 
  1. Review the summary and click Finish.

 

 

The NFS Datastore has been created and is mounted.
