Check the following list of solutions to common detection problems of Samsung external drives.
S1 Mini and S2 Portable

Check whether the USB cable is connected firmly and properly.

Check whether the drive's LED is illuminated.
The blue LED is located on the upper cover of the product. -
Check whether power is being supplied properly to the external drive. Does it make a ticking, clicking, or beeping sound, which would indicate that power is insufficient?
(For the S2 Portable drive, try connecting both of the connectors on the USB Y-cable.) -
If the system does not recognize the product continuously, try connecting to other USB ports or using a different USB cable.
Samsung Story Station

Check whether the LED light is illuminated.
The white LED is located on the bottom front side of the drive, and the LED becomes brighter as your turn the Power Dial clockwise while the Story Station is powered on. -
Check whether the product is connected properly to the power adapter.

Check whether the Power Dial is On.

If the system does not recognize the product continuously, try connecting to other USB ports or using a different USB cable.
