How to interpret Seagate model numbers

Back

Subscribe

An informative guide for understanding model numbers on Seagate, Samsung-brand, and Maxtor-brand drives of all kinds.

Post-2010 Seagate Model Number Formats:

Samsung Model Number Formats:

Pre-2010 Seagate Model Number Formats:

Seagate and Samsung-brand drives have at least three identifying numbers:

  • Serial Number
  • Model Number
  • Part Number

These numbers are printed on the drive's top cover label or on the external case. Beginning with the new, post-2010 model number scheme, the internal drive's electronic response to identification commands will be a combination of the Model Number and Part Number, separated by a hyphen. For example, the new Seagate 2TB Barracuda Green drive model ST2000DL003 with a part number of 9VT166 will display in Windows Device Manager as ST2000DL003-9VT166.
