Seagate FreeAgent Go: NTFS Permission must be set for 'Everyone' User Access

How to set user permissions for the EVERYONE user in FreeAgent Go Classic's Ceedo software.

Your FreeAgent Go may experience the following:

  • You cannot save files on the FreeAgent Go Drive that were created with a different account or on a different computer.
  • Ceedo Ready applications fail to install and/or run due to lack of user permissions
  • When you open a Ceedo Ready application, a window launches informing you that Running this program requires the Argo Add-on

Cause: By default, FreeAgent Go drives are configured with Administrator user permissions set to Full Control. However, on some FreeAgent Go drives, no user permissions have been set for the EVERYONE user.

Most end-users have Administrator access/permissions on their Windows computer. However, since the FreeAgent Go is an external drive with a portable environment, anomalies can occur if you connect the FreeAgent Go to a computer on which user permissions are limited (e.g., a computer at a library or an Internet Café) or any other system on which you log in as a user without Administrator privileges.

Solution: The following options are available to resolve this issue.

Option 1:

  1. Connect your FreeAgent Go drive to a computer on which you can log in as a user with Administrator access; for instance, the computer on which you installed FreeAgent Tools.
  2. From the AutoPlay window, click Start Ceedo.
  3. As Ceedo starts, you are informed that Your removable drive is formatted using NTFS with limited security permissions.

  4. Click OK to continue.
Note: For more information, click on the Learn how to change your drive's security permissions link.
    The Ceedo application loads.
  5. A window asks, A new Update for Ceedo is available. Do you want to install it now?
  6. Click Yes.
Note: For more information, click Learn more about this update to open the Release Notes for the update
  7. If firewalls have been installed on your PC, they may impede the update. Access your firewall and configure it to allow the Ceedo AutoRun application.
Note: Refer to your software firewall documentation to configure these settings.
  8. A second warning window states that Your removable drive is formatted using NTFS with limited security permissions.
  9. Click Fix to continue.
Ceedo loads and the Ceedo Update installs to your FreeAgent Go drive.

Once the update completes, the Welcome to Ceedo window and the Ceedo Easy-Access Menu open.

Your FreeAgent Go's drive permissions have been adjusted.

Option 2: Use this procedure if

  • Option 1 fails
  • You wish to apply the correct NTFS permissions to your FreeAgent Go drive without updating Ceedo

Note: Before proceeding, connect your FreeAgent Go drive to a computer on which you can log in as a user with Administrator access.

  1. Download/extract from Seagate's Support Web site to your Windows desktop.
  2. Browse to and double-click SeagateGoPermFix.exe.

The FreeAgent Go Permissions Fix application launches.
  3. Select your language.
  4. From the main menu, click Scan to find drives containing Ceedo.

After detection, your FreeAgent Go is identified by its drive letter and drive name.
  5. Click Test to verify drive permissions.
    1. If a warning states that Permissions are incorrect for this drive, proceed to Step 5.
    2. If a notice states that Permissions are correct for this drive, click OK or Cancel to close SeagateGoPermFix. No further intervention is required.
  6. If permissions are incorrect, click Fix.

SeagateGoPermFix.exe corrects the NTFS permissions on your FreeAgent Go drive.
Note: During the update, you may see the following:

    This is normal.
  7. The FreeAgent Go's drive permissions have been updated.

    Click OK to close SeagateGoPermFix.exe.
