Seagate / Maxtor Manager - Backup Errors/Messages (Windows)

Seagate/Maxtor Manager may actually skip certain files during a backup. This article helps interpret the various error messages that may appear in the log.

The backup.log file in Seagate Manager and Maxtor Manager will report only on files that are skipped or encounter problems during a backup. Keep in mind these errors are generally related to individual files, and not entire folders. There are many files that are typically skipped during a backup, see the information below to help interpret the various error messages that may show in the log.

The following is a list of errors/messages that could be generated by the Seagate Manager and Maxtor Manager Backup Utility. These errors/messages can be found in the Backup Log. This list provides the Error/Message generated in the Backup Log, its Cause and a Solution for overcoming the issue.

Error/Message: Not Supported/File skipped (backup of system files and folders is not supported)
Cause: File or folder has system attribute set
Solution: Backup of system files and folders is not supported
Note: This is a common error on the file thumbs.db which is a file created by windows to display thumbnail versions of the files in a folder. This file is recreated by the operating system if a folder is restored, so it is not necessary to backup this file.
This error is also common on the file desktop.ini which tells windows explorer how to arrange the files in a folder (list, details, thumbnails, special view), this file would be automatically recreated after a restore and it is not necessary to backup this file.

Error/Messsage: Error 2013
Cause: File in history folder is corrupted or unmovable
Solution: If an individual file is identified with the error, delete the affected file from x:\Seagate Backup\History folder on the external drive. If an individual file is not identified then it may be necessary to run Windows error checking on the external drive or delete the x:\Seagate Backup\History folder and run a fresh backup, if it can not be repaired.

  1. Rename the x:\Seagate Backup\History folder to something like x:\Seagate Backup\OldHistory
  2. Take ownership of that folder.
  3. Locate the root folder Users (7/Vista) or Documents and Settings (XP).
  4. Right-click on it and select Properties.
  5. Under the General tab, deselect the Read-only (Only applies to files in folder) checkbox.
  6. Using Windows Explorer, double-click on the Seagate drive to view the folders and files it contains.
  7. Right-click on the Backup folder and select Properties.
  8. Under the General tab, deselect the Read-only (Only applies to files in folder) checkbox.

Error/Message: Source or destination file invalid
Cause(s):

  • User renamed or deleted source file while backup is in progress
  • Connection to destination drive is interrupted or intermittent while backup is in progress

Solution: Check cable to the destination device.

Error/Message: Destination is not accessible
Cause(s):

  • After replacing a drive under warranty, the Manager software links the backup to the serial number of the drive, so since that replacement drive does not have the same serial number, this error is generated
  • If you have backup plans set to multiple backup devices (if one of those backup devices is not connected at the time the Manager runs a backup, it will attempt to run all backups. This means that one backup may be successful, but the other one will fail and generate this error. This also cause the icon to go red in the systray
  • Destination drive is not connected
  • SyncServices.exe stopped running (very unlikely)

Solution(s):

  • Go to the Backup button at the top in the Manager software, choose Delete Backup Plans, and then delete that particular plan. Then setup a new backup (since the Manager is now pointing to the new replacement drive's serial number)
  • Ensure the destination hard disk is connected to the computer
  • If do not want to backup to destination, delete backup plan
  • Reboot host PC to restart SyncServices.exe

Error/Message: Error getting free space
Cause: Unable to get free space information for the destination drive
Solution: Check cable to the destination device

Error/Message: Error (file name collision)
Cause: User deleted a folder and then created a file with same name in the same location
Solution(s):

  • Rename the file
  • Delete the History folder on destination

Note: This will delete all historical version except the most current version

Error/Message: Error (could not create directory on destination or access denied)
Cause(s):

  • Connection to destination drive is interrupted or intermittent while backup is in progress
  • Permission on the destination drive is not set to Everyone

Solution(s):

  • Check cable to the destination device
  • Set permission on the destination drive to Everyone

Error/Message: Error (could not delete file on destination or access denied)
Cause(s):

  • Connection to destination drive is interrupted or intermittent while backup is in progress
  • Permission on the destination drive is not set to Everyone

Solution(s):

  • Check cable to the destination device
  • Set permission on the destination drive to Everyone

Error/Message: Backup canceled
Cause: User stopped the backup
Solution: Start the Backup Plan without Cancelling

Error/Message: Disk Full
Cause: There is no more space on backup partition.
Solution: Create free space by deleting files that you do not need any more

Error/Message: Access denied
Cause: Cannot copy file because access is denied
Solution: Change security settings for the file to allow SYSTEM read/write access

Error/Message: Not Supported/File skipped (backup of hidden files and folders is not supported)
Cause: File or folder has hidden attribute set
Solution: Backup of hidden files and folders is not supported

Error/Message: Not Supported/File skipped (backup of offline files and folders is not supported)
Cause: File or folder has offline attribute set
Solution: Backup of offline files and folders is not supported

Error/Message: Directory does not exist, or path is invalid
Cause: The directory that user configured does not exist (i.e. user renamed/deleted directory or drive letter changed)
Solution: Reconfigure the backup plan

Error/Message: Not Supported/Folder skipped (backup of Windows System Directory is not supported)
Cause: Folder is a Window system directory
Solution: Backup of Window system directory is not supported

Error/Message: Open or locked file skipped
Cause: File is open for exclusive access by another program
Solution: Close the open program before backup

Error/Message: Internal Error xx
Cause: Unknown error
Solution:

  • Close all files that are giving you this error and/or that are open during the backup, then try the backup again.
  • Close down all anti-virus software during the running of the backup, or
  • Simply choose to backup only your data files, not the entire C: drive. Remember that Maxtor Backup is only meant to be a data backup, meaning your documents, photos, videos, music, etc. It is not meant to backup the entire operating system or to make a mirror image of your drive.
