Instructions about the only means of copying all of the files on a Maxtor Fusion to another Fusion drive.

This process will copy all of the files on the Fusion to another Fusion drive. This process is for transferring your data. Unfortunately there is no way to copy other the settings or external shares (such as microlinks, public status, shares, or tags, etc) to the replacement Maxtor Fusion™. Please refer to the Maxtor Fusion User’s Guide for the reconfiguration of these settings on your replacement unit.

Naming Conventions:
Original Fusion – the original Maxtor Fusion
Replacement Fusion – the replacement Maxtor Fusion that you just received
Make sure that the original Maxtor Fusion is connected and powered up before proceeding. Make sure that you have properly documented all network settings and sub-user account information for your original Maxtor Fusion. This information is critical to have before continuing this process. The Maxtor Fusion – Installation Checklist, found at the end of the Setup Guide provides you with a form that can be used for recording this information.

Connect and Setup the Replacement Fusion – Please refer to the Maxtor Fusion Setup Guide for more information.
After the Replacement Fusion is connected/and powered up:

  1. Launch the Fabrik Setup
  2. Select the Replacement Fusion’s IP Address and click Setup.
  3. From the End User License Agreement window, check the box to, “…accept the terms of the agreement” (found at the bottom of this screen) and click the Next button.

If the end User License Agreement screen is not displayed, you have selected the Original Fusion. Repeat steps 2 – 3 to setup the Replacement Fusion.

  1. From the “Welcome - Part I setup” screen, enter the Replacement Fusion’s Serial Number and click the Next Page button.
  2. The Admin Information Page opens. Enter the necessary admin password/System Time Zone settings and click the Next Page button.
  3. Enter the Static IP Address for the Replacement Fusion. You can accept the default, but please make sure it is not the same as the original drive. Please take note as you will use it later.
  4. The Congratulations window opens. Document this information on the Maxtor Fusion – Installation Checklist that came with your Replacement Fusion. Click the Finish button. You will receive several pop up messages and then be forwarded to the Maxtor Fusion login page. Login with the “admin” user, the admin password (you just setup) and press Enter.
  5. The Fusion Web Interface will prompt you to use the setup wizard. Select Later.

Create the Sub-User Accounts on the Replacement Fusion

  1. Click the Set Preferences button on the new Fusion. This is the icon on the right side of the web page.

  2. Currently the Replacement Fusion will only have the admin user. Click on the Add User button. Create a Sub-User Account for a user that corresponds with a user that is located on the Original Fusion.
  3. Once you have copied the user information, click Save. When finished, you will see a Fusion pop up saying “New User Created”. Repeat this process for each user.

Copy the Settings to the Replacement Fusion

  1. In the Preferences window for the Original Fusion, go to System Settings located at the top of the Preferences window.
  2. Click on Dynamic DNS which will also highlight “Remote Access/Sharing”.
  3. Copy the settings from the Original Fusion’s, Maxtor Fusion – Installation Checklist to the Replacement Fusion. Repeat this process for:
  • Outgoing SMTP
  • Port
  • Timezone

Please leave the Static IP under Local Network Address as it is. After you have copied the files to the new unit we will change this.

Copying Data from Original Fusion to Replacement Fusion - Windows

Next, you will use Windows File Sharing to copy the files between the drives.

  1. Connect to the Original Fusion by clicking Start > Run. In the Open: field type \\IP address (for example 192.168.0.99) and click OK.
  2. This will bring up a login window. You will want to enter the Original Fusion’s admin’s User name (admin) and password. Click OK.
  3. An Explorer window opens showing the shares on the drive. Double click on Homes folder.
  4. You will see a folder for each of the users. Go to the Edit Menu and select Select All (or press Ctrl-A). All user folders are now highlighted.
  5. Once again, go to the Edit menu again and select Copy (or press Ctrl-C).
  6. Connect to the Replacement Fusion by clicking Start à Run. In the Open: field type \\IP address (for example 192.168.0.98) and click OK.
  7. This will bring up a login window. You will want to enter the Replacement Fusion’s admin’s User name (admin) and password. Click OK.
  8. Open the Homes folder. You should see a folder for each user. Go to the Edit menu and select Paste (or Ctrl-V).
  9. You will receive a pop up message asking you to overwrite files. Click Yes to All. At this point data will be transferred (copied) from the Original Fusion to the Replacement Fusion. The copy process can take several hours depending on how much data is being stored.

If your computer goes to sleep automatically, please disable it so the copy process can finish.
Once you have copied the data, you probably will want to make sure everything is copied over. Try logging in to the Fusion and browsing what files are available.

Wrapping Up:

  • You are now ready to decommission the original drive. To do this, power off the Original Fusion.
  • Lastly, you need to give the Replacement Fusion the Static IP Address of the Original Fusion. Open the web user interface on the Replacement Fusion, select Set Preferences, and then System Settings. Give the Replacement Fusion the Original Fusion’s IP address.

Additional Information:

Please return your Original Fusion using the pre-paid shipping label provided with your replacement. You can use the Replacement Fusion’s packaging to return the Original Fusion.
