My drive is blinking an error code.  What now?

Troubleshoot the error by following these steps:

  1. Safely remove the drive (if possible).  See Document ID: 194471 for instructions.
  2. Completely disconnect the drive - its power and USB/Firewire cables.
  3. Wait 20-30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the drive.
  5. Turn the drive on again.
  6. See if the rapid blinking has been resolved.
  7. If not, run a diagnostic on the drive.  See Document ID: 192251 for instructions.
  8. Also, safely remove the drive and then connect it to a different computer running Windows XP/2000, if possible (though Vista and 7 are fine for Maxtor OneTouch III and 4).
  9. If the drive is not detected in (My) Computer, follow the troubleshooting steps in our external hard drive troubleshooter.
  10. If all these steps fail, check the drive's warranty status at our Warranty Services page.  You can create a defective product return order there if the drive is still under warranty.
